Everyone has their favorite kitchen utensils – and honestly you don’t need a hundred customized gadgets to run a great kitchen. But, there are a few I can’t live without and I can’t wait to share them with you! Some of these are favorite that my mom passed down – and some are just favorites that I discovered and will never live without. If you are registering for a wedding – or just wanting to restock your kitchen – I hope you like these favorite kitchen utensils!
This is a favorite in both Emily’s and my houses. Her mom (my aunt) gave me one at my wedding shower to make sure that it wasn’t lacking in my kitchen! I use this for so many things – for cookies, brownies – and even serving small pieces of meat at dinner. It’s really a fabulous gadget at under $10!
The Potato Scrubber
This is a funny little gadget that I received for my wedding. I didn’t register for it – but I should have based on the number of potatoes we like to eat at our house! This little guy has scrubbed all my potatoes and I just find him really useful. He’s super affordable at under $5.
Ok, let’s get practical. I use these ALL THE TIME. I use them to strain batches of pasta, vegetables, canned vegetables, rice – you name it! (I also use this to sift flour, powdered sugar or dry ingredients with lumps.) Instead of pulling out my colander for smaller quantities, I just use these and then throw them in the dishwasher. They are a great set!
If I can prevent cancer in my future, I will. And one thing that is suspected of causing cancer is ingesting teflon. This easily happens when we use metal utensils to scrape our non-stick pots and pans. Now, using teflon pots and pans is a GREAT thing – and I love my non-stick pots and pans. But, if you use a metal utensil in a non-stick pot, then any teflon that is scraped up and associated with your food could be a cancer-causing agent. So, for all non-stick pots and pans, I use non-stick utensils. (And, I have gotten rid of all pots and pans that have scrape marks on them.) I don’t have this exact set – but I definitely love my non-stick whisks, spoons, tongs and spatulas.
Now, I’ll tell you a secret. I am a can-opener destroyer. No joke. I have ruined about 5-6 can-openers in 5-6 years. I even broke the really expensive can-opener we got for our wedding – not a great moment. So, the lesson is that can-openers are super important and, around my house, are used every day. But, the biggest lesson is that you should care for your can-opener! I have found that wiping them down with a dry paper towel after use is the best way to clean them – without getting them wet. Apparently using water, or leaving residue on them, is the worst and causes rust. Oh, and this set by OXO has lasted the longest at 2 years – so I recommend them!
Those are just a few of my favorite kitchen utensils and gadgets! Of course, there are TONS more – so make sure you leave a comment with your favorites!
